The greyness, the coldness, the emptiness. That absence is not just the fact that his eyes were closed, it was everything about him. But Horowitz says it is not the physical reality that interests him. But the fastest way to become interested in two people is if one does something violent to the other.

The world-weary detective Daniel Hawthorne appears in his latest crime novel, The Sentence Is Death, alongside a clumsy and useless sidekick: namely the author himself.

Anthony Horowitz is both narrator and character in his own story, a self-deprecating, surprisingly funny detective yarn that is as much about detective fiction as the crimes at hand. So, as a sidekick to a detective, I really would be useless. That includes apparent insight into his working habits, his home life and the stress he feels as deadlines loom.

Horowitz says a lot of the pleasure of writing and reading crime stories comes from the puzzles they set. In a similar way a tacit agreement exists in the world of crime. The reader and the detective travel shoulder to shoulder for the entire journey, with one destination: the truth.

In the past few years I have really become involved with historical mysteries and this seems to be one of the best.

Notice history comes first - mystery second. Solving the crime though central to the plot of the Foyle's War stories it is not the key. The important part revealing how people "back then" felt about and reacted to what was going on. I think Foyle's War does an excellent job. You can feel the tension and weariness about the war. I also liked that though the various characters try to justify their actions because "there's a war on" you can tell that internally they know what they are dong is wrong or right.

Though Kitchen and cast do an excellent job bringing out these feelings and ideas without words and without over acting, I think we also have to give credit to the Director and the cinematographers.
