Thanks both to science and the fact that the epidemic has predominantly affected white America both rich and poor , our society has been rethinking the true cost of the war on drugs. And, as a result, more Americans than ever are advocating for addiction treatment over prison for those caught possessing illegal drugs.

We are not out of the woods yet. There are still swaths of lawmakers who cling to draconian drug policies as the solution to addiction. Which is why the fight to end the stigma of this most serious mental illness must continue. Under the volunteer ad coalition named the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, Joanou and the agencies got together and convinced television and radio stations to donate airtime to public service messages.

The problem was that no one was creating any content to fill those empty spaces. Eventually, Joanou came to Keye and asked if his firm could come up with a concept before that valuable airtime was taken away by impatient station operators.

Keye agreed. Amotivational syndrome is defined as a condition in which a person loses ambition or motivation to complete tasks that he or she would normally like to have completed. Amotivational syndrome causes a change in the chemistry of the brain.

Howard Simon, assistant director of public affairs for the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, said he believes the long-running ad campaign got the message across. Simon said that the commercial was not only effective but also was well-recognized. Simon said that the whole advertising model is different when you're trying to turn people away from a product rather than sell it to them -- which makes the process more difficult and the positive recognition more satisfying.
